Proctoring Options for Online Exams

Last revised 3/4/2025 by KK

Overview

UConn provides several proctoring solutions to help faculty administer online exams securely and effectively. These options are designed to accommodate different class sizes, course requirements, and testing scenarios. The three main proctoring options available for online faculty members include Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor, Respondus LockDown Browser + Instructor Live Proctoring, and ProctorU. Each of these services offers different levels of proctoring, integration, and support.

Proctoring Options

Respondus LockDown Browser + Monitor

Students take the exam using a specialized browser that restricts access to unauthorized resources while recorded via webcam and microphone. The automated system flags suspicious behaviors for review, making it suitable for larger classes where live monitoring isn't feasible. Faculty can set up the proctoring requirements directly within HuskyCT.

Respondus LockDown Browser + Live Proctoring

This option combines LockDown Browser’s restrictions with live proctoring using a video conferencing tool (e.g., Microsoft Teams). Students take the exam while being observed by the instructor or TAs in real-time. It is recommended for smaller classes (fewer than 25 students) due to the need for manual oversight. Recordings, if desired, must be set up independently.

ProctorU

A live, professional proctor supervises students throughout the exam and may intervene if suspicious activity is detected. Faculty must schedule exams via the ProctorU platform rather than within HuskyCT, and support is available through eCampus. This option is only available for courses paying the online course fee or associated with eCampus.
