Overview
ProctorU is a service used to authenticate a user’s identity and provide live proctoring of online assessments. Test-takers use ProctorU’s Guardian Browser, which enhances exam security by preventing the user from accessing unauthorized resources and functions on their computer. ProctorU uses a multi-step process to establish a user’s identity: a live proctor sees the user via a webcam, takes the user's photo, and checks the user’s ID. In addition to the authentication process, proctors ensure the integrity of the exam by using a webcam and screen-sharing technology to see the user and what they are doing during the exam session. This article is a guide for instructors implementing ProctorU in their course.
Considerations
Course Eligibility
ProctorU is only available for courses with the following modalities:
- Online Synchronous (OS)
- Online Asynchronous (OA)
- Online Blended (OB)
Other course modalities, including Hybrid (HB) or Hybrid Limited (HL), should explore other proctoring options such as Respondus Lockdown Browser + Monitor.
Scheduling Requirements
Exam Time Limits
eCampus funds up to 4 hours of proctoring per 3-credit course, and there is a 2-hour time limit for each exam. These time limits exclude a practice exam. Student accommodations for extra time also do not count toward exam time limits.
Note that exam timing is rounded to 30-minute, 1-hour, and 2-hour blocks toward the 4-hour limit:
- Exams scheduled for 0–30 minutes use 30 minutes of proctoring.
- Exams scheduled for 31–60 minutes use 1 hour of proctoring.
- Exams scheduled for 61–120 minutes use 2 hours of proctoring.
For example, two 90-minute exams would use two 2-hour blocks of proctoring, totaling the maximum 4 hours per course.
Timeline
Exams must be scheduled with ProctorU at least two weeks before the exam date.
Minimum Exam Window
Longer exam windows (8–24 hours) are highly recommended to maximize students’ chances of securing a time slot. Narrow windows (shorter than 8 hours) are strongly discouraged, and if used, alternative assessment methods should be planned for students unable to find an exam slot.
International Students
ProctorU may not be functional in all foreign countries. Faculty are responsible for notifying students about these limitations and should prepare alternative proctoring methods for students in affected locations.
Step 1. Obtain Your ProctorU Account
Therefore, using ProctorU requires a separate account.
Obtain a ProctorU Instructor Account
You must obtain a ProctorU Instructor Account before scheduling exams in ProctorU. This requires creating a general account and then having your account privileges set to the instructor role.
Create a General Proctor U Account
- Navigate to ProctorU’s Instructor Training.
- Select "Create Your Account."
- Complete the form with your information.
- Select your Institution: Search for and select "University of Connecticut."
- Email: Use your UConn email address.
Request Instructor Access
Email ecampus@uconn.edu with the following:
Subject: ProctorU Sign-up, Request for Faculty Access
I have completed the account request through ProctorU. Please provide instructor access so that I may begin to schedule my exams.
I understand that this service is only available for online courses. I will use ProctorU for the following course(s):
- [List course(s) with section number here or your request will be denied.]
I acknowledge that it may take up to two business days for my account to be activated.
Within two business days, eCampus will review course eligibility, convert your account to the instructor role, and send an email notification.
Step 2. Set Up Your Exams in HuskyCT
Configure the Assessments in HuskyCT
Your assessments in HuskyCT need to be configured specifically for ProctorU to administer and proctor the exam. Since ProctorU and HuskyCT do not integrate, ProctorU does not have editing access to your exams or course content in HuskyCT. If your course is still in development, these settings can be configured on an empty assessment without questions.
Assessment Question Types
Handwritten question responses are not currently supported or recommended. All questions should be presented and completed within HuskyCT.
Assessment Settings
Verify Scheduling Requirements to ensure you meet the exam time limits, schedule at least two weeks in advance, and have planned an appropriate exam window. Then, configure the assessment settings:
- Set the Due date. Verify this is correct.
- Do not select Prohibit late submission and Prohibit new attempts after due date. Checking these options will create issues if the last exam appointment takes longer than expected (due to technical issues) or a student needs an extension. The exam window scheduled with ProctorU will prevent late attempts.
- Configure Assessment results settings. Consider delaying the release of results to account for any make-up exams.
- Add Access code. Adding an access code prevents students from taking the exam without proctoring. The proctors will use this code to unlock the exam for students during their proctoring sessions. The code remains hidden from student view.
- Do not share the access code with your students.
- Use the copy icon to ensure it's correct in ProctorU.
- Add a Time limit less than or equal to ProctorU's session limit of 120 minutes (2 hours).
Release Conditions
Configure the release conditions such that the exam is available to students during the exam window. If administering a make-up exam for a student, add an exception and verify availability.
Create a Practice Exam
Create a no-stakes 15-minute practice exam so that students experience the testing environment prior to any actual high stakes scored assessment. Mimic the same settings that you will use for your exams so that the experience is authentic and students and any problems can be addressed in advance of actual exams. A practice exam does not count toward the 4-hour allocation of exam time per course.
Add Student Accommodations in HuskyCT
Once an accommodation letter is received from the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD), it is the instructor's responsibility to ensure the accommodation is entered into both HuskyCT and ProctorU. Add Student Accommodations in HuskyCT as usual — you'll add them to ProctorU in the next step.
Step 3. Schedule Your Exams with ProctorU
Schedule Your Exams with ProctorU
Since HuskyCT and ProctorU do not integrate, the exam needs to be scheduled separately in ProctorU.
- Verify Scheduling Requirements to ensure you meet the exam time limits, schedule at least two weeks in advance, and have planned an appropriate exam window.
- Login to ProctorU.
- Follow ProctorU's documentation to Enter An Exam through Your ProctorU Account. When completing the exam form, use the following information:
- Department: Select "Live+"
- Incident Users: Search for and select your name
- Instructor: Search for and select your name
- Exam URL: For HuskyCT exams, use the prefilled "https://HuskyCT.uconn.edu"
- Exam Password: Copy and paste the exam access code from HuskyCT. This password should never be shared with students; it is only for the proctor to initiate the exam.
- Exam Window: Keep in mind that ProctorU allows for 24/7 proctoring, and they may need to contact you during the exam window. If desired, multiple smaller windows can be set up to prevent being "on call" overnight — but be sure that the total availability still meets the minimum exam window length outlined in Scheduling Requirements.
- First Appointment: Ensure this matches the day/time the exam is set to become available in HuskyCT.
- Last Appointment: This is the latest the test-taker can start the exam. Set this to be the time provided for the exam plus one hour of buffer-time before the due date. (e.g., If your exam is due at 11:59 pm and is two hours, set the last appointment to begin three hours before the due date at 9:00 pm.) If for some reason, the last appointment takes longer than allotted (due to start-up time or technical issues), your HuskyCT exam settings were configured in the previous step to allow late submission.
- ProctorU will process your request, activate the exam, and notify you via email, typically within 24–72 hours. After the exam is activated, students can begin scheduling sessions.
Request Student Accommodations through ProctorU
Once an accommodation letter is received from the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD), it is the instructor's responsibility to ensure the accommodation is entered into both HuskyCT and ProctorU. Since these two systems operate independently, adding accommodations in HuskyCT does not automatically apply them to ProctorU. Instructors must manually input accommodations into the ProctorU system to ensure proctors are aware and can implement the required accommodations during proctored sessions.
- Login to ProctorU.
- From the top navigation menu, select "Support."
- In the upper right corner, select "Contact Support Team."
- Under "For Non-Urgent Matters," select "Create a Ticket."
- Complete the form fields.
- Are you a/an______?: Select "Instructor / Exam Provider / Admin." (More form fields will become available after this selection.)
- How can we help you today?: Select "Accommodation Requests."
- Select "Submit."
- ProctorU will apply the accommodation to the student's account.
If Needed: Schedule a Single User Exam
In certain situations, students may need to take their exam outside of the original exam window due to scheduling conflicts, inability to complete the exam during their originally scheduled time, or other extenuating circumstances. To accommodate these needs, instructors can create single-user exams in ProctorU. These are customized exam sessions set up specifically for individual students who require flexibility beyond the standard exam window. The single-user exams attach to the original exam and are stipulated by the same requirements (e.g., permitted resources) by default but can be modified as needed.
Before Scheduling
Before scheduling a single-user exam, the instructor must coordinate a specific time with the student to ensure the exam aligns with both the student’s availability and the ProctorU scheduling requirements. This coordination is crucial, as the instructor will need to input the agreed-upon time when creating the single-user exam instance in ProctorU. This process ensures that the student receives the necessary accommodation while maintaining the integrity and security of the examination process.
Schedule a Single-User Exam
- In HuskyCT: Add an exception for the student. Verify availability and configure the release conditions as needed.
- In ProctorU:
- Login to ProctorU.
- Follow ProctorU's documentation to Create a Single-User Exam.
Step 4. Communicate with Students and Provide Assistance
Update Your Syllabus
Students must be made aware on the first day of class in the syllabus that there will be remote proctoring, that their personal devices will need to meet specific technical requirements, and that a proctor will scan their exam workspace and monitor them through the duration of the exam. Use the syllabus template, which contains information on ProctorU, or add the following information to your syllabus.
Student Authentication
List "assessments using ProctorU" as one of your authentication methods and add a subsection on "Proctoring."
Proctoring
This course requires the use of ProctorU. Refer to ProctorU Student Information for details on equipment and software requirements, exam instructions, and technical help information.
Academic Integrity
When outlining your course expectations when it comes to academic integrity, describe how ProctorU incidents will be handled. Specify the academic consequence should a ProctorU incident constitute academic misconduct. Refer to Academic Misconduct FAQ for Faculty for more information on preventing and addressing academic misconduct. (The policies and procedures are the same for all course modalities.)
Technical Requirements
List "Proctor U (Measure Learning)" as required software for the course. Include the following links:
- Accessibility Statement: Meazure Learning Accessibility Statement
- Privacy Policy: Meazure Learning Privacy Policy; ProctorU Compliance and Privacy
- System Requirements: ProctorU Equipment Requirements; ProctorU Equipment Test
Update Your HuskyCT Course Orientation
We recommend that you include a dedicated section in HuskyCT that provides students with the necessary resources to familiarize themselves with the platform.

Review ProctorU Student Information to familiarize yourself with student requirements for using ProctorU and better assist students with questions.
Instructors should be available during the exam window (plan and schedule the window accordingly) to resolve any issues, especially those related to exam access. ProctorU may contact you during the exam window at the phone number provided during exam scheduling.
Step 5. Review Exam Analytics & Incident Reports
Review Exam Sessions
When first using ProctorU, review a few test sessions, even if there are no incident reports. This can help identify unanticipated situations or circumstances that arise and verify that proctoring is being fulfilled as expected. Once familiar with ProctorU, the incident reports should provide the appropriate prompt for action and identify which sessions need review.
- Login to ProctorU.
- Follow ProctorU's documentation to:
Review the Exam Analytics Dashboard
ProctorU provides an Exam Analytics Dashboard that allows instructors to review detailed analytics and incident reports for each proctored exam. This dashboard offers a comprehensive overview of student activity during the exam, helping faculty assess the integrity and effectiveness of their proctoring setup.
- Login to ProctorU.
- Follow ProctorU's documentation to Use the Exam Analytics Dashboard.
Review Any Incident Reports
If a potential academic integrity incident occurs, an Incident Report for the student is processed. Instructors receive an email notification with a link to the report. Instructors may also access the report from the Incident Report Center (within the Exam Analytics Dashboard).
Review of sessions identified by incident reports is mandatory in order to maintain academic integrity.
- Login to ProctorU.
- Follow ProctorU's documentation to Review an Incident Report.
- Follow-up on incident reports according to the policy outlined in your syllabus.
Tips for Success
- Remember that HuskyCT and ProctorU do not integrate — everything must be configured seperately.
- Create a low-stakes practice exam.
- Do not give students the access code.
- Schedule with ProctorU as soon as possible, and at least two weeks in advance.
- Add student accommodations to both HuskyCT and ProctorU.
- Outline how you'll handle Incident Reports in the syllabus.
- Encourage students to register early and test their equipment.
- Be available during the exam window for support.
- Be flexible with other proctoring alternatives.
- Review the exam analytics and incident reports.
